A Game of Chess

A short diagonal path he sometimes had to take,

To aid his peers and clear up a new way.

A mere pawn decided to dream,

Thinking hard work might fetch him

A place of significance in the scheme.

He worked hard and did as he ought to,

He never missed a command,

Nor any step while moving forward and onto,

A short diagonal path he sometimes had to take,

To aid his peers and clear up a new way.

Many died but he survived

To reach the end,

And boy! He was filled with pride,

He thought he had proved his worth,

His promotion must certainly be near

But his happiness collapsed

When he saw the endline, a dead end…

Face to face with the reality

Of the larger scheme of game of chess

His happiness collapsed,

His radiant smile became less.

The pawn saw he had no more moves left,

His hard work’s worth was noticed

But, to be given to someone else,

Thrown out of the board with utmost delight,

His place taken by someone sitting on the side,

He was already out of sight and out of mind…
